Anime has been booming since the pandemic started and teens were stuck at home doing the same routine every day with the want to change things up. Check out these eight anime movies and series that you can watch over summer. These are all available on Netflix or Crunchyroll.

A Silent Voice

After the reviews and reaction videos this film has received, “A Silent Voice” grew in popularity massively. Many have voiced the incredible message behind it and how heartbreaking the dramatic romance film was. The anime is based on a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima. Portraying disabilities such as what the main character has, impaired hearing, along with the amount of discrimination and bullying she faces because of what makes her different. The movie is Not Rated due to the MPAA not giving their rating on the movie.  This movie can be seen on Netflix.

Black Butler

With the sudden growth in popularity within the anime community, the Japanese manga-inspired series “Black Butler” made it to one of the media’s favorites with its comedic mystery filled adventures. The unique setting of having a demon butler and a 12-year-old orphan work side by side as they solve the many mysteries occurring within the Victorian London era adds a refreshing and laughable experience to the anime watching experience. This series is rated TV-MA (mature audiences) for violence, mature situations, and profanity. This series can be streamed on Netflix.

Death Note

Due to anime’s popularity, “Death Note” became a big hit despite how long it has been since it was originally released. The series originally aired on October 3, 2006 with a high rating in Japan because of how popular the manga was with a high school student discovering a supernatural notebook that grants its user the ability to kill. With the anime’s dark tone, psychological and supernatural thriller and vast mysteries, it was finally able to become an international favorite through Netflix. This series is rated TV-14 for dark fantasy, gore and language.

Demon Slayer

“Demon Slayer” not only has a series but it also released two animated movies in 2019 and 2020. The series and the movies are both very entertaining with a teenage boy’s hero’s journey plot and his little sister going on various adventures to defeat a demon who has been tormenting people and killing the demon slayers who dare to stand against it. This series is rated TV-14 for dark fantasy, violence, gore, and profanity. This series can be streamed on Netflix.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Unlike the earlier version of the series and the animated movies, “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” is by far the most liked by fans. With the short episodes about two brothers going on a journey to search for the “Philosopher’s Stone” they go on multiple journeys together in hopes of restoring their bodies in a span of 10 episodes. This series is rated TV-16 for drama, dark fantasy, science fiction and adventure. This series can be streamed on Netflix.

Komi Can’t Communicate

“Komi Can’t Communicate” is a new Japanese anime series on Netflix, which is based on an extremely popular manga series in Japan. With the plot of a high school boy befriending Komi and helping her to open up and talk with people, it also promotes awareness of social anxiety, and the subtle education of what social anxiety is and how to help someone with it. The mix of coming-of-age, romantic comedy, and slice of life does an accurate job of portraying the life of high-schoolers today. This series is rated PG for suggestive dialogue. This series can be streamed on Netflix.

“Spy x Family” is an ongoing series that is based on a comedy manga that became a hit internationally in 2019 for the graphics and fans’ personal favorite character, Anya. The anime and manga show a spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realizing that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, leading to many funny and chaotic adventures. This series has been very popular within social media after the first trailer was released, leaving fans excited for more and more episodes. The series is rated TV-14 for drama, comedy, action and romance. This series can be streamed on Crunchyroll.

Violet Evergarden: The Movie

The Netflix animated movie “Violet Evergarden: The Movie” received such amazing feedback and popularity with the emotional performance the characters bring to the screen and having their audience cry with them. The movie became the talk of 2021’s spring break with the movie’s fantasy and tragic romance story after the war. Violet Evergarden, a young girl who is used as a tool for war, learns to live properly as a normal human being. Her captain Gilbert Bougainvillea values Violet more than anything by seeing her as a human being rather than a tool. The movie is Not Rated due to the MPAA not giving their rating on the movie.
