Artist of the month: Kali Uchis

Angie Rumbo

Karly-Marina Loaiza better known by her stage name Kali Uchis, is a Colombian-American singer/songwriter, poet, music video editor and fashion designer who makes R&B soul music.

Uchis was born in Colombia but always moved back and forth between the U.S and Colombia as a child. When she was a teenager, Uchis finally settled in the U.S and was raised in Alexandria, Virginia, and graduated from T.C. Williams High School. She was introduced to music production and video editing during her last years in high school and released her official debut mixtape “Drunken Babble” on Aug. 1, 2012.

Her music is described as a “genre-defying” piece of work by many. Her style of music is not based on just one type of sound. Her music encompasses everything from reggae, doo-wop, jazz and R&B. Uchis uses many styles of music and makes them all work and pulls it off, which is something many artists can’t do. Spanish is included in her music because Uchis is proud of where she is from and wants to show off the beautiful language it is.

In 2014, she began collaborating with Snoop Dogg on the song “On Edge.” A year later, Uchis released her first studio project, which was her first EP, titled “Por Vida.” She went on tour in October 2015. On May 22 last year, she released a single titled “Tyrant” and then on Aug. 25 released another one titled “Nuestra Planeta.” Both these singles are both included in her debut studio album, “Isolation,” which she announced after performing on “The Tonight Show” on March 14.

Uchis writes poetic and meaningful lyrics. The vibe of her music is mellow but also energetic at the same time. Her music takes you back in time with her jazz inspired sound. Uchis also expertly shows her hard work and dedication in her music. You can listen to Uchis and her recently released album, “Isolation,” on Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music.
