‘Neo Yokio’ is the new Japanese Anime inspired show added to the honorable list of Netflix Originals.

The animated series created by Vampire Weekend band member Ezra Koenig premiered on Sept. 22.  When announced last year that a new American anime was being created, eyebrows were raised. Now everyone can breathe a sigh of relief because Koening produced a fresh new show with an interesting cast of characters that bring life to his creation.

The show’s melancholy main character, Kaz Kaan, voiced by movie star/rapper turned fashion icon Jaden Smith struggles to recover from the unfortunate breakup with his girlfriend, Kathy (voiced by Alexa Chung) who has moved out of the glorious, high-life obsessed city, Neo Yokio.

Kaz Kaan is a part of a long line of magicians now called Magistocrats who rose to their lavish lifestyle through performing exorcisms and purging cities of demons. The Magistocrats are seen as outsiders and new rich or ‘neo riche’ as Kaz’s archnemesis and rival Arcangelo Corelli (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) calls them.

Along with the stress of being a demon hunter, Kaz has to keep up with the latest fashion trends while striving to stay at the top of Neo Yokio’s most eligible bachelor list. On top of that, he must keep former fashion blogger Helena St. Tessero’s (voiced by Tavi Gevinson) growing rebellions against capitalism and Neo Yokio’s vapid focus on social status, at bay.

Luckily he has his friends Gottlieb (voiced by Desus Nice) and Lexi (voiced by The Kid Mero), his aunt Agatha (voiced by Susan Sarandon) and his trusted robot butler, Charles (voiced by Jude Law) to guide him in the right direction and help him out on his adventures along the way.

“Neo Yokio” brings comedic Anime to waiting American audiences with its release. The diverse cast of voice actors and their equal racially diverse cast of on screen characters keep this show modern and relatable to all. The blend of different genres and themes is the series saving grace in an era of competition between new shows vying for viewers and recognition.
