Since students cannot play rated M first-person shooter games at school such as COD, Halo or Battlefield, they turn to the next best thing.
Penguins Arena is a multi-player gaming experience where players take the form of penguins and competitively shoot snowballs at each other.
“The game is all about eliminating enemies by hitting them off the arena with a snowball,” said senior Skylar Keck. “The best part is that the players are penguins!”
Up to four players can play together on the same wireless network and they’re divided into four types of penguins: Blues, Pinks, Greens and Yellows. Players fight until one penguin remains.
On campus, up to 10 players usually gather in journalism teacher Adriana Chavira’s room to participate in student-made mini tournaments. Among these players are seniors Hayk Ferayan and Tyler Cure. Ferayan has been amusingly been named Penguin Champion.
The tournaments take place during lunch and sometimes nutrition.
Ferayan was the one who initially introduced the game to the group, discovering it in seventh grade while browsing the web.
“After discovering the game in seventh grade, I trained hard to become the expert I am today,” Ferayan said.
However, the matches can even get heated between players. When playing, students tend to yell and generally be boisterous. If one enters the classroom during a match, they’re likely to witness the entertaining chaos and tension.
What does prior Penguin Champion Cure think about his dethroning by Ferayan?
“Hayk doesn’t deserve to be the Penguin Champ,” Cure said.
