Junior Nadia Buer, who is passionate about reading books, found a way to keep Book Club together when the group needed a new president.
“It’s very casual and that’s why I like it,” Buer said. “I know that during lunch, I can just go to the library, talk about this book and carry on with my day. I joined the club in my freshman year. I fell in love with it because I love reading. It was nice to have a community with other people who also enjoy reading and just being able to talk about it with other people.”
Every Tuesday at lunch, Book Club comes together at the library to encourage students to discuss books they’ve read. This group consists of Buer, who is the club president, Librarian Alain Cruz, who is both a member and a sponsor for the club and sophomore Camila Rodriguez. Since it’s such a small group, they hope to add more people who have a passion for reading just as much as they do. The group is currently reading Wuthering Heights.
“As both the sponsor and a member of the Book Club, I chose to take on this role because of my passion for reading,” Cruz said. “My excitement about the club is to see a club that fosters that same love for books I have. Also, reading is something that is important and an activity that can bring people together. It’s something you do on your own, but it could also be something that builds community.”
When reading a longer book, they break it down into sections so that everyone can read three parts at the same pace overall. Each discussion starts with a summary of the section they’ve read. After that, they talk about how they felt about that specific section of the book, certain events, certain characters, actions and word choice. After that, they think about where the book is going to lead, such as any predictions they have about the book.
“Book Club for me is a place where I can escape from reality and visit different worlds in every book I read,’’ Rodriguez said. “The community that they create to make this club welcoming is something that helps a lot for me. Reading is very important and the fact that we have a club where students can come and improve their learning is very important.”
