Every month, we recognize two student athletes, one from a boys team and another from a girls team, for their performance on the field. This month, we recognize freshman Ava Weinstein.

This is Weinstein’s first year on the Birmingham Community Charter High School junior varsity girl’s basketball team. She is eager to showcase her abilities on the team and approaches each practice with dedication and determination.

Q: Why did you get involved in basketball and what sparked your interest?
A: My dad got me into basketball and the only reason I continue to play it is because I’m good at it.

Q: What position do you play or like to play on the court?
A: I play all positions but I will usually play center or wing.

Q: How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your sport?
A: I usually try to get my homework done when I’m done at practice or on the weekend.

Q: How do you stay motivated after losing a game?
A: The only game I lost was to Sierra (Canyon School) and how I coped with that is telling myself they’re superhuman and that I just need to work harder to beat them.

Q: Who is your favorite basketball player and why?
A: I don’t watch basketball so I don’t have a favorite basketball player but the player I know about is Kobe and he seemed cool.

Q: Why don’t you watch basketball?
A: I feel like it’s more interesting to play the sport than to sit on my couch and watch the whole game on my TV. The only time I watch it is to learn a new move.

Q: What is the greatest advice you have received in basketball?
A: My coach tells me to ‘not to check out and keep your head in the game’ because I used to have a habit that if we were down, I would just stop playing and not want to be there.
