2022 came out of nowhere with the games it gave us. Some were good, some were bad and some were too glitchy to play. But now, a new year is around the corner, which means new games to look forward to. Whether it’s known worldwide or indie-made, 2023 will have loads of games to discover.

In the new game, you play as the protagonist Alear as characters travel across four realms to prevent the resurrection of the apocalyptic Fell Dragon with the help of heroes from past Fire Emblem games. (Nintendo)

Fire Emblem Engage

Another game to look out for on the Switch is  “Fire Emblem Engage” releasing on Jan. 20. In the new game, you play as the protagonist Alear as characters travel across four realms to prevent the resurrection of the apocalyptic Fell Dragon with the help of heroes from past Fire Emblem games.

The tactical adventure role-playing game has already released multiple gameplay trailers along with the 1st expansion passed up for preorder for additional content when the game releases. The previous games (Fire Emblem: Three Houses and spin-off Three Hopes) brought new and old fans to the Fire Emblem series. Hopefully, Engage will get the same amount of hype from back then.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Coming out on March 24, Capcom plans to release another remake of an iconic entry, “Resident Evil 4.” The popular horror survival shooting and puzzle-solving adventure games have been in the works for a while with content they wanted to add but couldn’t due to deadlines. Now trailers are out and it will be playable on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Since it’s a remake, the story may diverge from the original or be kept the same. From what we know, the game will follow Leon Kennedy as he searches for the president’s missing daughter in a Spanish village that’s home to a murderous cult.

One of the biggest announcements coming from Nintendo is the long-awaited “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” with this being the last game for the Nintendo Switch. (Nintendo)

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

One of the biggest announcements coming from Nintendo is the long-awaited “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” with this being the last game for the Nintendo Switch. It is a sequel to the previous events of “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” (2017). Link comes back to Hyrule, where he and Zelda stumble upon a suspiciously Ganon-shaped corpse. Magical shenanigans ensue and chunks of Hyrule are sent soaring into the air.

So far, only three trailers of the impressive game and cinematics have been released. Anticipated on May 12, this single-player action-adventure game will surely take your breath away.

In Hollow Knight: Silksong, players will jump into a character named Hornet, who is the princess-protector of Hallownest and ventures into a kingdom of silk and songs. (Nintendo)

Hollow Knight: Silksong

No one expected that in 2017 we would get a game called “Hollow Knight” and blow us all away, but it did and we craved more. And now the developers are dropping another bomb with the announcement of the long-awaited sequel “Hollow Knight: Silksong” set for somewhere before June 2023. The player will be playing not as The Knight, but as a new character named Hornet from the previous game. Hornet is the princess-protector of Hallownest and she ventures into a kingdom of silk and songs.

No preorders are out for the game and so far snippets of gameplay are the only source of what to expect when it releases on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and other platforms. The Metroidvania, fighting adventure game plans to answer past secrets and introduce new ones with the sequel, so be prepared.

In Bomb Rush Cyberpunk, the player collects points by showing off their dance, parkour and skating tricks and possibly facing the cops to stake their claim in the metropolis, Hideki Naganuma. (Nintendo)

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

To anyone who knows someone who grew up playing “Jet Set Radio” (2000) praying Sega to make another entry, you may or may not know about an independent game developer named Team Reptile. Sometime this summer, a new game called “Bomb Rush CyberFunk” will drop for players. Team Reptile took matters into their own hands and snapped this game into existence, of course with a modern kinetic comic art style.

In the game, the player collects points by showing off their dance, parkour and skating tricks and possibly facing the cops to stake their claim in the metropolis, Hideki Naganuma. If you ever decide to play the game on the Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Linux or macOS, I hope you have fun running or skating around with a hint of nostalgia for some.

In Sea of Stars, you play as two Children of the Solstice with the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fighting off The Fleshmancer. (Sabotage Studio)

Sea of Stars

If you like role-play, turn-based adventure games that have a rich story and a beautiful modern retro art style, then the creators of “The Messenger,” (2018) Sabotage Studio, have got you covered. Originally set to release in 2022 but pushed back to 2023, Sabotage Studio developed a new world called “Sea of Stars.” You play as two Children of the Solstice with the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fighting off the monstrous creations of an evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.

Sabotage Studio has a website to check out where you can preorder a package to play the game on PC and console platforms of Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. With the developers dropping snippets of gameplay and more characters to help you out, this game is going to be full of surprises.
