Editorial: Trump making detrimental changes in first 100 days of presidency

President Donald Trump’s presidency has already caused worry and has had detrimental effects.

After the unfortunate presidential inauguration of Donald Trump on Jan. 20, a sweeping wave of executive orders and conservative cabinet members have washed over the American public that will ultimately lead to a step back for America.

The executive orders, ranging from a travel ban that keeps citizens from seven Islamic countries from entering the United States to the construction of a physical wall to keep out immigrants from Mexico, have stripped away the rights of many citizens. The travel ban, nicknamed the “Muslim Ban,” has kept people from entering the United States despite their possession of a green card and the construction of wall has become a heated discussion in Congress.

People have protested against this ban and lawyers have done everything in their power to reunite families that have been separated by this new order. Banning a person from entering a country based on their religious affiliation is not only morally wrong but is also in violation of the rights granted by the constitution.

No person should be discriminated based on what they believe in and the fact that the president is instituting these bans places a dark cloud over his term in office, which has just barely began.

Luckily, a federal judge in Seattle has at least temporarily blocked Trump’s executive order and ceased the travel ban. This can only be altered if the US Court of Appeals reverses the ruling, which is a very difficult task to accomplish.

As for the presidential cabinet, Trump has confirmed seven members including Betsy DeVos who will serve as Secretary of Education. DeVos was confirmed after Vice President Mike Pence cast a tie-breaking vote in her favor. DeVos’ confirmation as a cabinet member can potentially affect all students, as she wishes to cut grant money for colleges and is opposed to the idea of public education.

Cutting back on money given to students through grants would be a very bad decision and could potentially cause fewer students to move onto higher education if they can’t afford tuition without the help from grants.

Being students and citizens of the United States, we feel that Trump is not qualified to be president of the United States due to his lack of experience and irrational thought process. The presidential actions Trump has taken during these past few weeks have done nothing but harm those that came to this country searching for new opportunities and fleeing their previous lives to escape leaders similar to Trump.
