Cafeteria promises better menu but disappoints

By Hunter Tymich

Pancakes, burritos, sandwiches, salads, apples. These are just some of the items that are offered at the Daniel Pearl Magnet High School (DPMHS) cafeteria. Many of the choices on the menu are meant to appeal to the students while at the same time remaining healthy. However, the students are not too pleased with what they have to choose from.

The cafeteria at DPMHS is constantly working to upgrade the items that are served to students. A very popular item that has stuck around for a while is the coffee cake. Every day it is served in the cafeteria, students flock to the line in order to get a tray of the tasty cake.

In addition to the coffee cake, many students seem to enjoy the selection of fresh fruit offered. In my opinion, it is one of the better things to eat from the cafeteria since the fruit is always fresh.

One of the main complaints made by the students is not about the food itself, but the quality of the food. Often time’s students say that it looks like it was just thrown into a microwave and then given out.

“I feel like it is unhealthy and very gross,” says senior Sydney Lua.

Lua, like many other students, eats at the cafeteria regularly. The, majority of students share her opinion.

While serving food, the cafeteria is also required to accommodate the vegetarian students who attend the school.

“There are hardly any vegetarian options offered,” senior Alexandra Downs said.

As someone who often eats lunch in the cafeteria, I’ve noticed the only option offered to vegetarians are the side salads and fruits. Not having enough options for vegetarian students is an issue that the cafeteria should focus on.

There have been many complaints made by students about the quality of the cafeteria food. Even after revamping the menu and offering more choices, students still seem unsatisfied with that they are eating.

A decent amount students at DPMHS choose not to eat at the cafeteria. This is definitely a sign that changes should be made to the lackluster menu.

While LAUSD has served hamburgers in the past, nearly every item is supposed to be made with different ingredients thus making them healthier. Toppings like lettuce and tomatoes were not options in previous years.
