It’s been a tough season for the Birmingham Patriot players on the girls varsity volleyball team, however by the time they finished their last game it was clear they gave it their best.

Their Nov. 10 game against Hamilton was not as successful as planned with the Patriots losing 3-0. It wasn’t their only defeat this season though the girls are ready to make a comeback.

“I’ve been playing volleyball since 6th grade,” senior Siena Tinoco said. The team itself had continuous successes all throughout the pre-season, such as Sept 3 non-conference game against Kennedy, the Patriots winning 3-1. Other victories the team scored include Sept. 10 non-conference game against Panorama by 3-2 and Sept. 6 game against Locke by 2-0.

Playing for Birmingham Community Charter High School has only broadened her horizons, being a gateway to making new friends and learning more about what it’s like to be a team player. Her first year on the team had been the most awkward, only having one fellow DPMHS student on the team alongside her. Though a lot has changed over the last three years. She’s made friends from both schools, and the hard work that goes into practices only expanded her  motivation.

For Tinoco, scores are just numbers. The bonds she’s made over time have only benefited her.

“It’s really good to bond with the girls,” Tinoco said.
