Teachers to receive 10 percent pay increase

After eight years without a pay raise, Los Angeles School District teachers will receive a 10 percent increase over the next two years.

This new contract has been approved by both the union membership and the Board of Education. UTLA and LAUSD wrote a tentative contract that includes a salary raise of 10 percent.

It also speaks to other demands that UTLA had such as increase numbers of counselors and smaller class sizes. The demand for more nurses, counselors and librarians were reduced in past years.

According to the tentative agreement contract summary on the UTLA website, there will be re-openers on evaluation and class sizes on 2015-2016. Complete details of the agreement have not been released.

Neither LAUSD nor UTLA have responded to attempts to be interviewed. LAUSD has made promises before but some never took place according to teachers.

According to UTLA website, in 2007 LAUSD promised employees will be issued personal payroll history reconciliation statements by August 5, 2007. The date passed and nothing happened. “They have made minimal promises so I think they will go through it. Except the class sizes, they always wiggle out of that,” music teacher Jackie Gorski said.
