Energy drinks are damaging

Irene Feher

Energy drinks are very popular among teenagers and young adults but some don’t know how unhealthy energy drinks are to the human body.

Energy drinks, like Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar, contain lots of caffeine, which can provide an energy boost but can prevent sleep. The drinks have many stimulants and contain large amounts of caffeine and sugar, which shouldn’t be in a person’s diet.

Many people don’t know the side effects and the danger of energy drinks. The caffeinated drinks include many stimulants that can increase the heart rate and blood pressure and dehydrate the body. According to the Brown University website, too much caffeine can give the energy drink user nervousness, irritability, insomnia, rapid heartbeat.

Instead of drinking energy drinks on a daily basis to get extra energy, I play tennis daily, drink lots of water and include sleep a lot each night.

I have a traditional view on diet and stay away from coffee, soda and energy drinks. I can’t rely on those caffeinated drinks for energy. I like to drink lots of water and juice every day for energy throughout the day.

Also as an athlete, I like to take care of my body and stay away from energy drinks. My dad and the Birmingham Community Charter High School’s girls tennis coach always tell us to drink water.

My dad always warns me to never rely on energy drinks for daily energy, since he’s afraid I won’t be able to sleep and stay jittery. He tells me to eat healthy, to drink water and sleep well each night to have energy that lasts throughout the day.
