Opinion: Tired of seeing the same faces in Hollywood movies

I am getting tired of Jennifer Lawrence.

Every time a new popular movie comes out, her name is on the top of the list as one of the main characters. According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), Lawrence was casted three times each year since 2011.

Psychologically it is in human nature to get tired of watching a same thing multiple times. This is no exception. People will soon get tired of seeing the same faces every time they go to the theater.

Sadly, Lawrence is one of many. Shailene Woodley, who is  number one on the famous actress list, is currently casted in four movies this year according to IMDB. Her co-star Theo James in the teen blockbuster “Divergent” has been casted three times. Emma Watson who is number eight on the list has been casted for at least two movies every year since 2010, is currently filming her movie “Regression” which is to be released in 2015.

An interesting observation about the films Woodley stars in is that most of the time she is casted with the same co-stars. Her co-star Miles Teller from “The Descendants” was also in “Divergent.” Her on screen brother Ansel Elgort, from “Divergent,” is casted as her lover in “The Fault in Our Stars.”

If an actor or actress has been casted in a blockbuster, people would likely associate them with their characters. When people see the same actor two months later in another movie it is hard to accept them and their new character, especially if the new character is similar to the previous one.

“I don’t like the idea of it because every time I see that actor I think of other movies that they did,” sophomore Jasmine Nunez said.

Although, there are people who enjoy seeing their favorite actors being casted in multiple movies in one year.

“It is a good idea because many people watch the movie because of who acted on it,” freshman Kunokern Chustsel said. “It also has benefits for producers.”

It is true that some people watch particular movies because of the cast, even when they have no clue about the plot of the story. Let’s not forget that not everybody likes that specific actor, therefore they will avoid watching it. Especially when actors don’t even match the character.

Something else to think about is if they are using the same people, there is no room for new talents. For some movies they do not even do auditions anymore, this causes the lack of diversity in movie industry.

“I don’t think is good idea because other should also get opportunity to shine,” freshman Cameron Vega said.

This is anything but something new, yet it is becoming more common and noticeable than before. It has been this way in movie industry. They use the same actor until someone better comes along but how they are going to find that new talent if they are not giving others a chance?

There is no problem with being famous or casted in popular movies. The problem is how frequently they appear on the big screen. This is what needs to be avoided. Casting directors should allow more room and be open minded for fresh faces. This makes it less likely for the audience to lose interest on actors and movies.
