Boys soccer defeats Bell High in a decisive match for championship

With a successful winning streak during season Birmingham Community Charter High School’s (BCCHS) boys varsity soccer team were crowned city champs of playoffs and will soon play against Anaheim High School in the 2014 CIF Southern California Regional – Division 1 Tournament.

The first game in the playoffs was a bye, but the second game of the playoffs was not. The Patriots played against South East High School in round two of the playoffs. It was an entertaining game and Birmingham managed to keep control of the ball throughout the game. BCCHS defeated South East 3-0.

The quarter finals of the playoffs was a tense game against their rival El Camino Real Charter High School. Both teams struggled with controlling the ball, with fouls and injuries on both sides. The Patriots managed to score a goal in the first half which led to their victory. Later they defeated Locke High School 2-0 during the semi-finals.

“I feel like there have been good accomplishments. I’ve had an adrenaline rush watching them,” goalkeeper Michael Linan said.

In their final game, in the 2014 CIF Los Angeles City Section Boys Soccer Playoffs Brackets – Division 1, the Patriots played against Bell High School in a exciting game that led to over time.

BCCHS made the first score during the first half with a free kick  until Bell tied the score three minutes before the game ended. In the first minute and a half of overtime BCCHS scored the winning goal taking the title of city champions. The game ended with BCCHS 2-1 against Bell.

“I felt good about our team and confident that we would get the job done,” offensive-mid Jonathan Hinojosa said. “ When we scored our second goal everyone hugged our forward. We accomplished so much. We were undefeated, so many people doubted us and we proved them wrong.”
