Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?

A: The thing I enjoy most about Daniel Pearl is that the classes are really small and it’s easier to focus on the work instead of being distracted by multiple kids.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: I would describe my freshman year as pretty slow. The classes, since they’re really small, there’s not the same amount of energy as there would be in a big class but that kind of helps out. 

Q: What goals do you have for this school year? 

A: The goals that I have for this school year are to try to make it on the baseball team for Birmingham and have A’s and B’s.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain

A: In four years, I see myself at CSUN studying computer engineering. In 10 years, hopefully, I will become a computer engineer. 

Q: What is your favorite class so far and why?

A: My favorite class so far is PE because I like playing football or even soccer.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about Daniel Pearl Magnet High School?

A: I really like the small class sizes at Daniel Pearl because it’s much easier to get help from your teachers when there aren’t a lot of people in your class. I really enjoy the people here and everyone’s really nice.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: So far, I think my freshman year is going pretty well. I think it’s a lot better than middle school, so I’m really happy about that. I have a lot more friends than I did in middle school.

Q: What goals do you have for this year?

A: Trying to get straight As, specifically an A in math because I don’t think I’ve ever gotten an A in math. But so far, I have an A in math, so I’m really happy.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years?

A: Definitely in college. I want to continue journalism as a career, so I hope I’m getting a degree in journalism.

Q: Do you like this school so far? Tell me why.

A: I really love it here because all of the teachers are amazing and all the people, all my friends, everyone is really nice.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?

A: In this school, I enjoy how welcoming the community is and how the teachers just know everyone’s names.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?
A: My freshman year so far has been pretty enjoyable and my friends are nice, so that’s good.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: Some goals I have for this year are to end it with all A’s because I want to make my mom proud.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain

A: I don’t know because I don’t know what I want to do. I don’t know anymore.

Q: How do you feel about the small school environment?

A: I really like the environment of small schools because I’ve never been in a big school, so it just feels right to me.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about Daniel Pearl Magnet High School?

A: I really enjoy seeing my friends every day and the fact that we have Fiesta Fridays, two Fridays a month. It’s a lot of fun.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: I would describe it well because all of my teachers are very good to me and I’m doing very well with my grades.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: One of my goals is to have good grades, improve in math and also learn more about journalism.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years?

A: In four years, I see myself pursuing a career. I’m not sure yet which one, but yeah.

Q: Who is your favorite teacher so far?

A: I don’t have a favorite teacher. They are so good, I don’t have any.

A: The thing I enjoy the most about Daniel Pearl Magnet High School is the frequent spirit days.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: I would describe my freshman year so far as pretty fun, chill and less nerve-racking than I thought it would be.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: The goals I have for this school year are to get all A’s and community service hours.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain

A: In 4 years, I see myself graduating with a 4.0 or higher and, cross my fingers, going to Stanford University.

Q: So far, what is your favorite class and why?

A: So far, my favorite class is math class because I love the subject and the teacher, Mr. Duke (Tuan “Duke” Hyunh).

Q: What do you enjoy most about DPMHS?

A: I enjoy the photography class the most because I really like taking pictures and photography in general.

Q: How do you describe your freshman year so far?

A: I think I’m liking my freshman year so far. I think it’s going pretty well. I just don’t like the fact that school doesn’t have the football field for sports, but besides that, it’s going pretty good.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: I want to have straight A’s for the school year and I just want to have a good year in general for teachers.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? 

A: Hopefully, I’m in college. I want to go to college and study architecture to become an architect.

Q: What’s your favorite class so far and why?

A: My favorite class is probably photography because I like pictures and the art of photography in general.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?

A: I enjoy the teachers the most because they’re all so motivated and they all clearly love what they do. 

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: My freshman year so far has been really good. I have made friends. I am academically involved with the school. I think it’s been going good overall. 

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: I want to maintain straight A’s and get more involved with the Daniel Pearl (MHS) community, like the music community and journalism community.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain.

A: In four years, I see myself probably at a four-year college. I would probably be studying psychology, philosophy or music.

Q: How did you find out about DPMHS?

A: I found out about Daniel Pearl (MHS) through my mom because she works for LAUSD and her friend, who also works for LAUSD. I think she had a student who was enrolled here and so she was telling my mom about how great it was. I did a tour and I just really liked it.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?

A: What I enjoy the most about Daniel Pearl (Magnet High School) is hanging out with my friends and the teachers. 

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: I would describe my freshman year as okay. It’s probably going to get better.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: My goals this year are to learn, stay focused and get good grades.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain

A: I see myself at CSUN (California State University, Northridge) in four years and in 10 years, I see myself having a job related to sports.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS? 

A: I like that the classes are small and that it’s almost impossible to be late. 

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far? 

A: My freshman year has been really good so far. I feel like it’s really calm right now.

Q: What goals do you have for the school year?

A: My goal for the school year is to be accepted into the volleyball team for Birmingham and to hopefully get all A’s.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years and in 10 years?

A: I see myself in either CSUN (California State University, Northridge) or UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) studying photography and being on their volleyball team. In 10 years, I hope to be on the US national volleyball team and to be a professional photographer on the side.

Q: Why did you decide to come to Daniel Pearl (Magnet High School)?

A: I went here because my brother had gone here and because I like how they have classes on photography, so I can start to get used to how cameras work.

A: The thing I enjoy most at Daniel Pearl is the small school environment.

Q: How would you currently describe your freshman year?

A: I would describe my freshman year as kind of quiet and calm; not that drama-filled.

Q: Do you have any goals for the school year?

A: My goals for the school year are just to pass all of my classes.

Where do you think you would see yourself in four years or ten years?

A: In four years, I would hopefully see myself graduating. In 10 years, maybe some sort of small job for the time being or something in journalism.

Q: Who is your favorite teacher here at Daniel Pearl this year?

A: My favorite teacher so far this year is Ms. G (Francesca Gunther). She is my favorite.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?

A: What I enjoy the most about Daniel Pearl is how nice people are and how it’s like a small school, so it’s not that crowded.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

How I would describe my freshman year so far is pretty cool; it’s calm. Everyone’s pretty nice and I’ve reunited with my friends from elementary.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: The goals I have for the school year are to get good grades, A’s and B’s and yeah, that’s pretty much it.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain.

A: Where I see myself in 4 years is graduating high school with A’s and honors. Where I see myself in 10 years is going to college or being in college already and taking medical classes or school.

Q: How do you feel about the small school environment?

A: I feel positive about it since I grew up in a big school in Northridge, so I feel like it was a really ghetto school. It wasn’t that fun being around so many people, so it feels good to be in a small environment with barely any people.

A: The thing I enjoy most about Daniel Pearl Magnet High School is getting to talk with my friends at lunch.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: I would describe my freshman year so far, as you know, it’s kind of a new start, a space for like new opportunities and I’m really enjoying it

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: The goals that I have for this school year, I think, are to get all A’s.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain.

A: This is kind of difficult. In 4 years, I think I would want to get a job because I need money to buy things and I’m not sure what job yet, but I would like to look for a job.

Q: If you could ask your graduating self one question, what would it be?

A: If I were to ask my graduating self a question, I would ask, “What was the most difficult time for you in high school, and how did you overcome it?”

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?

A: What I enjoy the most about Daniel Pearl Magnet High School are multiple things. One thing that I really like is how the students and the teachers are very together, almost like they always say, a family. Another thing I enjoy is the student store. It’s different from other schools. They usually just have you pay to get lunch and stuff like that. With the student store, I’m able to get snacks that I personally want for a cheap price.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: I have a bunch of mixed feelings; a little anxious, nervous and excited. I had some bumpy roads with my friends and teachers, but honestly, I really do like the school, I really do enjoy it and I love this year so far.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: My goals I have are that I hope I can get grades that I feel proud of and know that I put in the effort and that I earned this grade. Another goal is that I can love myself more and be more open to doing things I enjoy at school.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain.

A: I honestly see myself maybe working at a factory, possibly, or as a businessman. Honestly, I have no clue. I’ve always had mixed feelings about what I want to do in the future and I don’t know what is the best option in my opinion.

A: “What would you have done differently?”

Q: How would you describe your freshman year?

A: I would describe it as good so far because I have good grades right now.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: My goals are to keep up with my good grades. Sports-wise, just to get a good three-mile time.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? Explain.

A: I see myself graduating from school and going to a good college.

Q: How did you find Daniel Pearl (Magnet High School)?

A: Mr. (James) Morrison came to my middle school for a high school fair. I just saw a shark, so I wanted to get the slip. I saw it had 200 students, so I thought it would be cool to go to a small school.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?

A: At Daniel Pearl, I enjoy the small campus and the group of teachers there.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far?

A: I would describe my freshman year as very calm, quiet and with very little drama compared to previous schools.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: For the school year, some goals I have are to keep straight As and avoid any drama.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? Explain.

A: In 4 years, I see myself hopefully finishing high school and having more college credits done than I currently do.

Q: What about 10 years?  

A: In 10 years, I see myself hopefully being an accountant or lawyer for businesses and having a master’s degree.

Q: What’s a hobby you have?

A: A hobby I have is drawing and fashion design.

A: I really like the food here.

Q: How would you describe your freshman year so far? 

A: I would describe my freshman year as fun and enjoyable. 

Q: Why is that? 

A: It’s because of the people and teachers and how much they care.
Q: What are some goals you have for this school year? 

A: Some goals I have for this school year are to have all A’s and to get better at running.  

Q: Where do you see yourself in 4 years? 

A: In four years, I see myself in law school with a full ride.  

Q: What about in 10 years? 

A: In 10 years, I see myself as a lawyer, probably running for district attorney in California or Massachusetts.  

Q: Who’s your favorite teacher so far? 

A: My favorite teacher so far is probably Mr. (James) Morrison. He’s my favorite teacher. I wish he’d teach my biology class.

A: The thing I enjoy most about Daniel Pearl is playing volleyball with my friends outside during lunch.

Q: How would you describe your sophomore year so far?
A: My sophomore year so far has been pretty good; nothing’s really hard yet.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?
A: My goals for this school year are to make sure my grades don’t go below a C.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years?  

A: In four years, I see myself getting my bachelor’s degree in sonography.

Q: What about 10 years?

A: In 10 years, I see myself starting my career or in between my career as an ultrasound technician.

Q: Are you doing any extracurriculars?

A: I play volleyball.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?
A: So far I enjoy the community and all the adults, like the teachers and the administration. They’re all much nicer than my last school and all the students are much nicer too. I like the small school environment better than a super big school, which was my last one.

Q: How would you describe your sophomore year so far?

A: So far, my sophomore year has been a lot better than my freshman year. My grades have been better, my social life has probably been better too. Last year I hated being at school and I had a bunch of absences but I don’t think I’ve had a single one this year. I really don’t mind coming to school anymore.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?
A: My goals for this year are to keep my grades up and continue taking honors and maybe some AP classes next year, so that I can help my GPA a little bit.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years?
A: In four years, I see myself at a four-year college or university.

Q: What about in 10 years?

A: In 10 years, I see myself working in something surrounding fashion marketing and stuff like that. I’d like to work on magazines, so something artistic.

Q: Why do you like the small school environment?

A: My favorite thing about the small school environment is that there’s more individual attention since the classes are smaller, so I can get help easier and everyone seems a lot kinder overall.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about DPMHS?

A: What I enjoy most about this school is how small it is, how it is very easy to get to all the classes and how it’s very nice and compact. It’s nice to see familiar faces in all of your classes, too.

Q: How would you describe your sophomore year so far?

A: My sophomore year so far, I would describe it as very well. Actually, the teachers are very nice. I have been getting along with a lot of people, been getting my work done, the workload isn’t too bad and it’s very nice. It’s very calm.

Q: What goals do you have for this school year?

A: The goal I have would be to graduate and get all A’s or at least good grades, passing grades or above average. I don’t know.

Q: Where do you see yourself in four years? In 10 years? Explain.

A: I see myself either studying literature or art in four or ten years. I see myself going to a community college and trying out different things.

Q: What school did you go to before this school and how is the environment different?

A: Before this, I went to Taft (Charter High School) and the environment was very high schooly, if that makes sense. A lot of the kids were very rough, cold and distant. The teachers weren’t as welcoming. I admit the honors teachers were very nice but the regular ones weren’t. I would say there was just less of a sense of community.

A: What I enjoy most about Daniel Pearl (Magnet High School) is how tight the community is.

A: I would describe my junior year so far as very entertaining.

A: My goals for the school year are to finish the school year with nothing below a B.

A: In four years, I see myself hopefully in college and starting to work on my master’s in psychiatry. In 10 years, I see myself either finishing that degree or having a degree in that line of work.

Q: What is your favorite class so far and why?

A: My favorite class so far is Ms. G’s (Francesca Gunther) American Literacy class because it’s very entertaining and very interesting.
