PEN helps students get published
May 24, 2013
“Imagination to Reality” is the title of the anthology book written by Jamie Whitmarsh’s fourth period Creative Writing class.
On May 20, each student stood in front of their peers and a few invited guests to read their stories as a publication celebration. PEN In The Classroom (PITC), an organization dedicated to publishing the stories of young writers, sent instructor Byron Flitsch to help the student of Room 14 get their ideas on the page, then their ideas into a book.
“It makes me feel successful and accomplished,” junior Jocelyn Cabrera said.
In the audience were a few friends of the teen writers who had been invited to the reading, along with Michelle Meyering, director of programs at PEN.
Each student went up and stood at the podium and read only a page of their story so everyone would have the time to read. Unfortunately, not everyone had the chance to share their stories in two periods. Cabrera, luckily, was one who got the chance to share her short story “Those Days.”
“I felt confident,” Cabrera said.
The anthology books had been scheduled to arrive on the day of the reading. However, editing took a little longer than expected. Hopefully, soon the books will be in the hands of the writers, who are ready to share their work.
