App of the Month: "Songza" has a song for every part of life

By Elitza Batchiyska
Editor-in-Chief

Whether you’re looking for the background music to a moment or to your life, the music-streaming app Songza doesn’t just let you pick your music, it opens up worlds of music for you.

Photo by Elitza Batchiyska. This is just an example of some of the “themes ”that Songza offers. They are based on the time of day, mainly.

Songza finds playlists of countless genres for you depending on your activities, moods and preferences. Based in part on the day of the week and the time of day you access the Songza app or Songza.com, suggestions of activities you may be doing will come up. On a weekday afternoon, one is likely to find playlists for studying, cooking, or working out. Meanwhile, on a weekend evening, one is likely to find playlists for hanging out with friends, unwinding or putting on their party dress.

When you choose a mood or activity, it will lead you to another page that will allow you to choose a genre that suits you at the moment.

Afterward, two to three playlists will be displayed with information on what artists are included in the playlist and a description of the playlist’s style and sound, thus leading you to make your final decision.

Genres for a specific activity can range anywhere from classic rock to hipster-approved indie electro to recent chart-toppers.

Nonetheless, the music browsing does not just stop at one’s activities and moods. You can also browse by decades and culture, which includes holiday music and music popular in different cities.

Sometimes, upcoming events will lead to featured playlists on Songza. For example, during February, playlists for the Grammys and for Fashion Week were often displayed on the application’s front page.

In addition, you can search songs and playlists through the Record-store Clerk option, which puts together random favorites and more obscure options, like “Mustache Music (Or: Cool in the 70s)” and “Beatlemania.”

However, some of the most appealing aspects of Songza are not that of their well-rounded music selection.

Songza is free and does not require you to sign up or log in. It is also completely devoid of ads, unlike Pandora and Spotify. Check out Songza here or download it for free on Google Play or the Apple App Store.
