Characters from Nintendo will brawl it out in the fifth installment of the “Super Smash Bros.” series.

The announcement came at the end of the March Nintendo Direct, an event where Nintendo releases information on new content such as games or consoles.

A clip was played during the event showing the inklings from the third-person shooter game, “Splatoon.”

The inklings have been the only new characters confirmed for the new installment, although they appeared as a skin for the Mii Fighters in previous game, “Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.”

The “Super Smash Bros.” series started in 1999 with the first game releasing on the Nintendo 64 with twelve playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Fox, Captain Falcon, Link, Kirby and Ness.

The second installment, “Super Smash Bros. Melee,” released in 2001 on the Nintendo GameCube with more new fighters.

The third in the series, “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” released in 2008 for the Wii, and the fourth game, “Super Smash Bros for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS,” released on the consoles of the same names. The series creator, Masahiro Sakurai, has confirmed that he will be working on the new title.

The untitled new “Super Smash Bros.” game has been planned to release this year on the Nintendo Switch.
