Carlos' Collection: New York debuts rising star

By Carlos Godoy: Sports Editor –

A combination of R&B, rap and rock all come together to form a mixture of styles in contemporary artist Outasight’s new and second album “Nights Like These.”

The man behind it all is Richard Andrew, 29, who goes by stage name Outasight. He’s a talented musician from Yonkers, New York, with a new sense of approach for music ever since the start of the decade. He promoted himself with a few gigs and in Oct. 2009 signed a deal with Warner Bros., by hitting it off with a six-track EP titled “Further.”

The first track of the album is “Let’s Go,” which proceeds as a rhythmic song. A twist however when Andrew starts rapping, complementing the beats thereafter. This however is the beginning of the mixture of styles that fuel the complexity of this album.

Drinking probably isn’t the smartest thing to do when in your high school years, but his song “I’ll Drink To That” is all about setting yourself free with a drink. Music wise, the acoustic guitar at the beginning sets the mood just right, and as the message, times are hard so let’s drink to we what we’ve got, take a shot and have some faith, the music elevates.

Although it’s a great song, enjoy it; don’t do what the lyrics say.

After all the excitement, it continues with a techno infused song entitled, “Tonight Is the Night.” Its debut was in 2011 during the second week of X Factor’s initial season. It then reached no. 6 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs after becoming a sing the same year. On the album, it’s the transition from flashy beats to more calm type of song.

Songs’ lyrics can be prose and can influence the listeners as much as the music itself.

Both of those is what you can grab from, “Under Lock And Key.” It starts off with piano and leads into strings to make a much mellow sound. The lyrics then accompany the same mood of the song. To be under lock and key is for something to be stored securely, in this case, memories.

A good way to end the album is, “Nights Like These,” and also a good way to end the day. Outasight really knows where to put the pauses, the drops and the raps. This song has that taken care of perfectly.

The album is available on the iTunes store.
