App of the Month: Write or Die

Photo by Chris Bower An assignment is being typed up in Write or Die. The word count is how many words that have been typed and the clock in the bottom left shows how much time is left.

Procrastination is one of  the most dreaded enemies, particularly among students. There’s Twitter, Facebook, and many more distracting tabs that keep us from finishing important assignments.

Putting the ‘prod’ in productivity is the motto for Write or Die. Write or Die is an app that is designed to avoid distractions and procrastination. It all begins with self-motivation and discipline to those who lack consistency in writing and procrastinate.

Imagine this scenario: As you’re writing consistently you decide to stop of a while. Then, the screen will turn to a dark red and all of the work that you’ve been doing starts deleting by itself word by word. The punishment continues unless the writing and time goals are met. The message is clear: write or else.

The app has three modes. There’s gentle, normal and the disturbing yet fun kamikaze. The gentle mode is primarily for beginners. The normal mode will play the most unpleasant sound until you keep writing. It is best described as a creepy scream. Last but not least, the kamikaze mode is where the fun begins. Once you stop writing for a certain amount of time, the app deletes a word every second.

Once you get used to the app, you will write and write until you have accomplished your goals. Through its punishing it teaches a valuable lesson of how procrastination can affect your work in high school, college, and in the real world.

Write or Die is available online for free and more features are available on the desktop version, which costs $9.95.
