The girls basketball team struggled to figure out how to work together at the beginning of season and due to practice the girls achieved greater than they had expected.

“We didn’t know how to work together on the court and we weren’t familiar with the coach’s techniques,” junior Jessica Ramos said.

The Birmingham Community Charter High School girls junior varsity basketball season started on Dec. 3. The team finished their season with a record of 5-5 on Feb. 13.

To prepare for the season, the team took a more physical approach with heavy conditioning and learning new positions on the court. Daily practice consisted of passing, dribbling and two-on-three drills to help them improve technique.

“Since the team received a new coach, we needed to learn new positions,” shooting guard Ramos said.

Even though the team’s weakness was the chemistry on the court, the team had decent shooters and posts. Yet, there was still room for improvement to reach their full potential as a team.

During season the team struggled with their defense and executing their positions.

“I feel we didn’t fulfill our full capacity but I know the team has enough talent to perform their best,” Ramos said.

The team finished the season better and stronger than the beginning. They figured each other out and knew their places on the court better as a result of their rigorous practicing.

The girls had various wins and losses strung throughout season. One of the best moments Ramos remembers was the improvements shown in the two matches against the Cleveland Charter High School Cavaliers.

“The first time we played Cleveland, we beat them in overtime by four,” Ramos said. “Then we won the second time against them by a score 15, which was huge for us since it was the last game of the season.”
