Got chocolate milk?

Chocolate and strawberry milk is finally being brought back into the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) cafeterias.

In a vote of 6 to 1 held on Oct. 18, the Board of Education decided to reintroduce flavored milk back into the schools.

In 2011 a ban on flavored milk was implemented due to the accusations made saying “the drinks had unnecessary added sugar and contributed to childhood obesity.” To meet in the middle, the school district’s milk supplier said they would lower sugar content added into the milk. This helped to minimize the speculation of the sugar content causing obesity.

According to the Los Angeles Times article published on Oct. 18 “The drought is over at L.A. schools. For chocolate milk, anyway,” the Board of Education is planning a study to reintroduce chocolate and strawberry milk into 21 schools to see how is accepted back into school meals.

This plan includes a four-part study “that would treat school cafeterias as behavioral science laboratories.”

The plan was made by board member Monica Ratliff who believed that the milk in school now is all going to waste due to the lack of interest in its flavor. This plan helps student be more engaged in eating during school hours and less milk will be wasted.

The school district was contacted on Nov. 4 to find out when the flavored milk will be available in cafeterias, but they didn’t know.
